phos|phate «FOS fayt», noun.
1. a salt or ester of phosphoric acid. It is present in rocks and in plant and animal remains. Phosphates are necessary to the growth of plants and animals and have extensive use as fertilizers. Bread contains phosphates.
2. a fertilizer containing such salts.
3. a drink of carbonated water flavored with fruit syrup, and containing a little phosphoric acid.
